Shed Slabs and Footings: What You Need to Know Before You Build

One of the most common questions I’m asked is, “Can I pour my shed slab before the engineering is complete?” 

My answer is usually the same. 

It’s worth waiting. 

Over the years, I’ve seen projects delayed, slabs modified and unnecessary costs added simply because the foundations were poured before the engineering was finalised. It might seem like you’re getting ahead, but it can create much bigger problems later if the slab doesn’t match the structural design. 

While every project is different, your slab and footings need to be designed to suit your building, your site conditions and how the building will be used. Getting this stage right almost always saves time, money and frustration later in the project. 

Although TechSpan don’t typically get involved in the construction of the  slab or footings ourselves, I spend a lot of time helping clients understand what’s required before any concrete is poured. A little planning upfront can make the rest of the project much smoother. 

Why Slabs and Footings Matter More Than You Think 

A lot of people think the slab is simply somewhere to put the building. It’s a critical part of the structural system. 

Your slab and footings are responsible for transferring the building’s loads into the ground and supporting the structure for decades to come. 

When they’re designed and constructed correctly, they provide: 

  • Structural stability. 
  • Safe load transfer into the ground. 
  • Long-term durability and performance. 
  • Compliance with the engineered building design. 
  • Confidence that your building has the right foundation from day one. 

If the slab or footings don’t match the engineering, it can lead to delays, additional costs and, in some cases, demolition and reconstruction before the building can even be erected. 

What Determines the Right Slab and Footing Design? 

One thing I often explain to clients is that there isn’t a standard slab design that works for every shed or steel building. 

Every project is different. 

The final slab and footing design depends on factors such as: 

  • Soil conditions and site classification. 
  • Site slope and drainage. 
  • Building size and structural loads. 
  • Internal equipment, storage systems or overhead cranes. 
  • How the building will be used now and in the future. 

This is why I always recommend waiting until the engineering has been completed before organising the concrete work. Guessing or making assumptions at this stage rarely ends well. 

One of the Most Common Mistakes I See 

One mistake I see more often than I’d like is when a slab is poured before the final engineering drawings have been issued. 

I understand why it happens. Everyone wants to keep the project moving. 

The problem is that once the engineering is complete, footing locations, reinforcement requirements or slab details may change. If the concrete has already been poured, those changes can become expensive and time-consuming to fix. 

In my experience, taking the time to complete the engineering first almost always saves more time than trying to get ahead. 

Other Common Issues 

Some of the other issues I regularly come across include: 

  • Footings that don’t align with the structural column locations. 
  • Site conditions that haven’t been properly assessed. 
  • Builders or contractors working from outdated drawings. 
  • Questions not being asked until after the concrete has already been poured. 

The good news is that almost all of these problems are avoidable with good planning, clear communication and the right advice early in the project.

The Best Way to Approach Slabs and Footings 

The projects that run most smoothly usually follow the same sequence. 

  1. Complete the building design and engineering. 
  1. Confirm the site conditions. 
  1. Finalise the slab and footing requirements. 
  1. Construct the slab in accordance with the engineering drawings. 
  1. Begin steel erection knowing that the building foundation has been built correctly. 

It might seem like a simple process, but following it can prevent a lot of unnecessary stress later.

  • Every shed requires slab and footing designs that suit its engineering, site conditions and intended use. 
  • Pouring concrete before engineering is complete can create unnecessary delays and costly rework. 
  • Soil conditions, building loads and wind region all influence foundation design.

Frequently Asked Questions 

Can I pour my shed slab before engineering is complete? 

In most cases, I wouldn’t recommend it. Waiting until the engineering has been completed ensures the slab and footings are designed to suit your building, site conditions and structural requirements. However if you were to pour your slab prior to final engineering it is critical that the Foundation are not pour until the design is finalised, they cannot be compromised. 

Why can’t every shed use the same slab design? 

Because every building and every site is different. Soil conditions, building loads, wind region and how the building will be used all influence the slab and footing design. 

Does TechSpan build concrete slabs? 

Typically TechSpan wouldn’t get involved in the construction of the slabs and foundations However, we do normally provide the engineering requirements, explain what’s needed and can connect clients with experienced builder partners if required. 

What happens if a slab doesn’t match the engineering? 

Depending on the issue, it may require engineering changes, additional concrete work or, in some cases, partial demolition and reconstruction before the building can be erected.
